Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question particular calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
