Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
