Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state early analysis suggest the substance was likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.

City officials stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the public for information.

An important official commented the vandalism made him stunned and required to be solved quickly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
